Non-Pharmacological Strategies in Osteoarthritis Management

We invited 4 international experts in osteoarthritis to share their recommendations about the non-pharmacological strategies in osteoarthritis management.

Discover the 2 videos of their interventions and below the main take aways of their recommendations.

Video 1: Monique Chalem (Rheumatologist, Santa Fe de Bogotá, Colombia) and Dr. Juan Carlos Cajigas (Department of Rheumatology, Hospital Español Mexico City, Mexico) discuss about overweight and obesity as risk factors for osteoarthritis.

Video 2: Prof. Demirhan Diraçoĝlu and Prof. Yves Henrotin highlight the important role patient education has in managing osteoarthritis.

Overweight and obesity exacerbates the symptoms and progression of OA.

  • Overweight and obesity increases joint stress, contributing to OA development.
  • Managing weight through an adapted diet and physical activity is crucial for preventing further deterioration or loss of cartilage.

Educating patients about healthy habits and self-care is key to improving their health condition and overall quality of life.

In the case of metabolic phenotype of OA, associated with overweight, it is essential to focus on the interplay between metabolic syndrome and osteoarthritis outcomes. A multidisciplinary strategy is essential for an optimal management.

  • There is a metabolic syndrome and OA progression connection: Metabolic syndrome can accelerate OA progression, with the obesity-linked metabolic phenotype being the most understood.
  • Improving OA Management: Recognizing metabolic syndrome characteristics may enhance strategies for managing OA.

Address the importance of physical activity for preventing and managing OA.

  • Non-pharmacological treatments are essential and (e.g., adapted exercise programs) should not substitute pharmacological treatment.
  • Regular exercise helps maintain joint function and reduces pain.
  • Personalized exercise programs are recommended to enhance OA management.
  • Educating patients about OA significantly enhances long-term adherence to treatment and effective self-management.
  • Increasing patient awareness of OA can lead to earlier detection and more effective disease management.
  • Providing comprehensive OA education helps patients understand their condition and the importance of regular follow-ups.
